Mum-in-law nose bitten off

TT, Balurghat, July 4: A 55-year-old woman's nose was allegedly bitten off by her younger daughter-in-law in a quarrel over selling paddy yesterday.
According to sources, after Sumitra Laha's husband's death, the family's agricultural land was divided into three parts. Two portions went to the sons and the rest to Sumitra. Her plot was, however, cultivated by her younger son Gupinath for all these years.
A police source said: "Recently, the paddy was harvested and the family decided to sell it in a local market. Around five quintals of paddy were harvested in Sumitra's plot and she had asked Gupinath to hand over the harvest to her but he denied."
"Gupinath tried to take the paddy to another market yesterday. When Sumitra refused they broke into an argument, and Pratima, Gupinath's wife walked in, abused Sumitra and bit her nose, severing a portion of it. The couple also assaulted her and fled," he added.
Sumitra was admitted to the Balurghat district hospital where the doctors put eight-nine stitches on her nose.
Today, Sumitra filed a complaint against Gupinath and Pratima. A senior police officer said efforts were on to nab the accused and a probe was on.
