JU among Asia top 100 educational institution

SNS | Kolkata | 22 June, 2016: Jadavpur University (JU) has achieved yet another remarkable feat by featuring among Asia’s top 100 universities in a Time Magazine’s survey, 2016.
In the recently published survey, JU is the only university from India to rank in the top 100, vice-chancellor of JU Suranjan Das said on Tuesday. JU has ranked 84 in the list.
“It’s an honour for the university to be ranked in the top 100 of Asia’s universities. It is an assurance that we are the number one university in the country,” Das said highlighting the achievement of the university.
Upholding the spirit of his students he added, “It only proves that the students indulge in both fields, politics as well as education,” making reference to the repeated instances of student agitation at the university. However, compared to the previous year’s survey when the university had ranked 74, this year’s their ranking has slipped almost ten places.
Das attributes the reason to the lack of proper funds needed to upgrade infrastructure. “The universities that fare well in such international rankings should be given greater financial support by the Centre.” He also sought that JU be demarcated as a centre of excellence so that more funds are allocated to the university.
Acknowledging the state government’s constant help and support for the university, he said, “ The university recieves 10-15 per cent financial help from the Centre and the rest is contributed by the state. We want the Centre to grant us more funds to built our infrastructure, to built modernised laboratories and libraries for the students.” In fact the other institutes that have ranked in the top 100 from India are all institutes and not universities, Das pointed out.
“We want that the entire university be given a tag of centre of excellence as we have repeatedly proved our worth and have brought pride with our works to the country.” The only institute to make it within top 100 from the state is IIT Kharagpur, while Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore is the other institute to feature in the list. Adding a new feather to its cap, JU is looking forward to expanding its foreign connect. The Exeter University has agreed to sign an MoU with JU to foster student exchange programme for the digital humanities section of the university.
