Youth kills grandmother

TT, Alipurduar, May 3: A youth allegedly killed his grandmother who protested his involvement in timber smuggling last night.
According to police sources, Keshab Sarkar, 27, was involved in illegal timber cutting and smuggling for the past few years. He used to stay with his grandmother Kalpana Sarkar, 71, after he lost his father. His mother works as a domestic help in Assam.
Keshab, from Samuktala, used to smuggle timber from Buxa Tiger Reserve. When Kalpana came to know about it, she protested and asked Keshab to leave the illegal activity.
"Last night, Keshab and the old lady entered into a quarrel and Keshab hit the grandmother twice on her head with a log," said a neighbour. Around 11pm, the lady was found dead.
Avaru Ravindranathan, the superintendent of police, Alipurduar, said: "We have started a probe. The accused is absconding and the body has been sent for post-mortem."
