Tribal girl hangs herself

TT, Jalpaiguri, May 10: A 16-year-old tribal girl hanged herself from a ceiling fan last night. It is suspected that she committed suicide after she came to know that the man with whom she had a relationship for more than a year was married.

"Preliminary investigations suggest that the girl had no inkling that the man was married. It was only yesterday that she came to know about it. We suspect that it prompted her to take the step. We are looking for the man," a police officer said.

The girl had been staying with a family since her childhood as her parents lived elsewhere for work. She was a Class XII humanities student in a Jalpaiguri school.

"She was in a relationship for the past one-and-a-half years or so. The man got married six-seven months ago," a police source said. "Recently, the man's wife came to know about his relationship with the girl after she saw some text messages in her husband's cell phone. Yesterday, the woman met the girl and told her that the man was her husband. It seems the girl could not take this revelation and committed suicide," an investigator said.
