SSB seizes cigarettes, cattle and Chinese apples from Indo-Nepal border
Jayanta Gupta | TNN | May 18, 2016, KOLKATA: The 29Bn of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), based at Khaprail, seized a pickup van near the Indo-Nepal border with cigarettes valued at Rs 19,00,000.
The seizure was made in the wee hours of the morning on Wednesday. The Nepali cigarettes were being smuggled to markets in India, particularly in north Bengal.
"Based on a tip off, sub inspector Bipin Kumar and seven jawans made the seizure under BOP Hilleybhanganj.
The seized items were handed over to the customs office at Sukhiapokhri. Two smugglers were also arrested. They have been identified as Suman Rai of Gopal Dara village in Darjeeling and Kumar Thami of Nepal," a senior SSB official said.
In another incident, troops of the 41Bn, SSB, based at Ranidanga seized 35 cattleheads being transported in a truck at Kistorpur. The cattle worth Rs 6,70,000 were being smuggled from Nepal to India. Vikash Singh and four SSB jawans made the seizure and apprehended a smuggler aged about 55.
The 41Bn also recovered 152 boxes of Chinese apples along with a truck near Power House, Mirik, on Wednesday morning. The seizure, worth Rs 500,000 was made by assistant commandant Praveen Kumar Hasde along with eight jawans.
A resident of Kurseong was apprehended.
