TOI, 24 May 2016, KOLKATA: The detective department cyber cell has arrested a driver from Howrah, Shahnawaz Ahmed, for allegedly stalking and harassing a women on WhatsApp.
The police said Ahmed downloaded the profile photo of his target, morphed it and sent it back to her, along with vulgar messages.
"We traced the mobile phone number of the accused. But as he had given a fake address, it took some time to locate him," said an officer.
The tech giant helped the police with the probe. The police pointed out that the government and security agencies needed to understand such mobile applications as more and more people were using them.
An officer said the only way to "intercept or monitor content being exchanged through these apps is by invoking IT Act Sec 69. But there are detailed criteria for agencies to be able to do that."
