NBMCH staff face probe

TT, Siliguri, March 9: A court here today directed the officer in charge of Matigara police station to start an investigation against Nirmal Bera, the superintendent of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, and other medical staff members on alleged neglect that had led to the death of a woman last year.
The order was given by the additional chief judicial magistrate, Nilanjan Moulik, on a petition filed by Kripanath Sharma, whose daughter-in-law had died after falling from a wheel chair at the hospital on December 26, 2015.
Sources said Madhabi Sharma, had delivered a baby girl through caesarean in December. As the woman had some complications, she was under treatment.
Sharma and other relatives alleged that negligence on the part of NBMCH superintendent, doctors and other medical staff members had led to Madhabi's death. "The hospital authorities had formed an inquiry committee at the time of the incident but nothing has come out of it. Her relatives had approached Matigara police several times since then but they refused to accept a complaint. The court heard the case today and directed the officer in charge of Matigara police station to treat Kripanath's complaint as an FIR. The police were directed to start an investigation immediately," said Sandeep Mandal, the advocate representing Kripanath.
Bera, the NBMCH superintendent, refused comment.
