Hill Students’ Association lends helping hand to tea garden children

EOI, Siliguri 13 Mar 2016: Extending a helping hand, the Hill Students’ Association, the members of which comprise students from the Darjeeling hills studying in North Bengal University, distributed food stuff and essential stationery items to children of the three primary schools at the closed Dumsipara tea estate.
Ever since the garden’s closure by the Duncan Company, the workers of Dumsipara have been facing a lot of trouble in making ends meet, and the effect of this can be seen in the hungry eyes of the kids. The government is yet to take a concrete step to address the issue, and this complacency has prompted two local NGOs to come in aid of the residents of Dumsipara. And on March 12, the HSA too teamed up with them to provide essential items to the workers and their families.
On Saturday, HSA president Pratiksha Rana led a team of 14 members to Dumsipara and distributed the essential items. They received active support in the endeavour from Suman Lepcha and Kiran Gurung of Sri Sathya Sai Organisation, Harsing Hatta.
