Garden legal camp

TT, Siliguri, Feb. 7: A legal awareness camp was held on the closed Panighata Tea Estate in Mirik block today in preparation for a Lok Adalat that would look into the problems faced by workers in the garden.
The programme was organised jointly by the District Legal Services Authority of Darjeeling and Darjeeling District Legal Aid Forum.
"Around 100 people, mostly women, attended the camp held near the factory of the estate. They complained about lack of 100-day rural job scheme, poor healthcare, inadequate water supply and sanitation facilities and non-payment of wages and dues. Some told us that despite working for a few days under the job scheme several months back, they had not been paid yet. The workers said there were irregularities in distribution of widow pension and ration cards," said Amit Sarkar, the general secretary of the legal aid forum.
