Deb barb at Siliguri civic body

TT, Siliguri, Feb. 26: Minister Gautam Deb today accused the Siliguri Municipal Corporation of not co-operating with the government and said it was delaying the execution of development projects being taken up by the state in town.
For around nine months, mayor Asok Bhattacharya has been saying the state is not co-operating with the SMC and it is posing problems for the Left-ruled civic body. This is the first time that Deb has come up with the same allegation.
"Over 30 different projects are being executed by the state in Siliguri. But unfortunately, there has been deliberate non-cooperation by the civic body," Deb said at a seminar organised by his department and the Confederation of Indian Industries here today.
"There are several instances where infrastructure and facilities created by the state are not being properly maintained or are being damaged."
Asok Bhattacharya said: "It is the government which is deliberately non-cooperating with us. Even today, we have not received Rs 85 crore, to which the civic body is entitled, from the state. We want to make it clear that after May, we won't need their help to obtain funds."
