Strike withdrawn

TT, Darjeeling, Jan. 6: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha today decided to call off its chakka jam (transport strike) in Bijanbari on January 8, the same place and day for Kalimpong MLA Harka Bahadur Chhetri's scheduled public meeting, as "it (agitation) would be seen as going against democratic norms of the country".
Chhetri had alleged yesterday that the Morcha had called the transport strike for the upgrade of Bijanbari block to a subdivision on Friday in order to foil his public meeting.
L.M. Lama, the convener of Bijanbari Subdivisional Demand Committee that was formed by the Morcha today said: "Bimal Gurung requested us not to go ahead with the chakka jam as it would be seen as going against democratic norms of the country."
