Death sentence to 3 convicts in Kamduni case
Judge Sanchita Sarkar delivered the verdict at around 3.37 pm on Saturday in which Ansar Ali Mollah, Saiful Ali Mollah and Amin Ali were sentenced to death. The other three convicts --- Bhola Naskar, Aminul Islam and Imanul Islam --- will face life term.
The case dates back to June 2013 when a 20-year-old college student was abducted, gang-raped and murdered in Kamduni, near Barasat in West Bengal. The victim, a second year BA student of Derozio College, was walking home along the Kamduni BDO Office Road in the afternoon, when she was abducted and taken inside a factory where she was gang-raped. She was later murdered.
The incident led to widespread protests across the state and hit the national headlines as well. However, the protests met violent reactions from the ruling Trinamool Congress cadres, which in turn led to political slugfest in the state. The Opposition in the state joined the protests and the government was seen to be on the back foot.
