Seven killed in two accidents

TT, Jalpaiguri, Dec. 22: Seven persons died in two separate accidents in Jalpaiguri district today.
Three youths riding a motorcycle died near Kathambari after the two-wheeler collided with a truck. Police sources said Emabul Haque, 27, Atosh Roy, 24, and Bikram Chhetri, 27, all residents of Odlabari, were going to Kranti this morning. When they were about to overtake a car, a truck came from the opposite direction and the motorcycle rammed into the truck, killing one on spot. The two others were rushed to a nearby health centre in Odlabari where they died. The police reached the spot and seized the truck.
Later in the afternoon, the second accident occurred around 15km from Dashdarga, under Kotwali police station of Jalpaiguri. "Four persons, Shankar Dey, 61, his wife Rita, 50, daughter Riya, 25, and driver Rajkumar Roy, 31, died when their car collided with a truck on NH31D. The family was returning from Siliguri," said a police officer.
Dibakar Chakraborty, Shankar's nephew, who was also travelling with them, has suffered serious injuries and is under treatment at Jalpaiguri district hospital. Rita Dey and the driver died on the spot.
The accident led to traffic congestion on the highway for an hour. Traffic was diverted through other routes.
