Raft owners up the ante
Rajeev Ravidas, TT, Kalimpong, 3 November 2015: The Teesta-Rangit River Rafting Owners' Welfare Association again stopped rescue operation on the Teesta river from Thursday to exert pressure on the NHPC to pay compensation to its members for the loss of livelihood because of dams which made the river turgid and rafting a boring experience.
The raft owners, numbering about 30, from Teesta Bazar and Melli used to help rescue people and recover bodies and vehicles from the Teesta that runs along NH10. They accused the NHPC of dilly-dallying on paying the compensation despite agreeing in principle to do so.
Bishal Chhetri, the publicity secretary of the association, said the Darjeeling district administration had called a meeting of all stakeholders on December 9 to discuss the compensation demand.
