Free fest pass for tea workers
TT, Alipurduar, Dec. 17: Workers and their families living in the shut and ailing tea estates in the Dooars are being given free tickets for a 10-day fest that started on December 15.
The Biswa Dooars Utsav Committee, which is holding the festival on the Parade Grounds here, started the distribution yesterday.
"They are spending days and nights in depression and uncertainty and we want to bring smiles on their faces for at least few hours," Sourav Chakraborty, the general secretary of the fest committee and district Trinamul president, Alipurduar, said. He said thousands of free passes have been distributed already and transport would be arranged for the tea workers and their families.
The cost of each ticket for one entry on one day is Rs 5.
Trade unions have criticised the move at a time several deaths have been reported from Dooars tea gardens
Today, Bini Oraon, 48, a worker of the shut Redbank estate, died at Birpara hospital.
