Two killed, two injured in tanker explosion

EOI, Siliguri 6 Nov 2015: In a freak incident this morning, two people got killed and two others seriously injured when an oil tanker caught fire and exploded in the West Dhantala area of Fulbari near Siliguri.

Sources said the oil tanker was parked near a welding shop in the area for repairs early this morning, when sparks from the welding equipment ignited a fire causing a massive explosion.

The shop’s welder Shisheer Saha from Dhantala and tanker attendant Debu from South Bharatnagar were killed on the spot, while the tanker’s driver Ratan Roy and another shop employee Sonu Burman were critically injured.

Roy is from Roypara in Bhaktinagar and Burman is from Dhantala. Both have been admitted to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital and are said to be in critical condition.

The massive explosion caused mayhem in the area, with locals running helter-skelter. Fire brigade personnel and police along with the locals took more than an hour to douse the fire. Fire-fighters later revealed that the tanker was empty and did not have any inflammable material. Had it been full, the measure of destruction would have been much bigger and tragic, they added.
