Hill TMC urges state govt to take legal action against ‘errant’ garden owners
PRASHANT ACHARYA, EOI, Siliguri
6 Nov 2015: The hill Trinamool Congress has asked the state government to take legal action against those tea garden owners who have suspended work without paying bonus to workers even after putting in a year of hard work.
Rajen Mukhia, president of hill Trinamool Congress, today briefed NBDD minister Gautam Deb of the present plight of the workers of three closed tea gardens under the GTA during a meeting at Uttarkanya.
He said, "If the state government does not take serious action against the owners and direct them to reopen the gardens immediately, the situation may become violent as the workers will face acute shortage of food and essentials."
Presently, Dwarika, Upper Fagu and Panighatta Tea Estates, all under the GTA region, are closed. The minister today had called a meeting with government officials including those of the labour, electricity, food and supply and health departments to discuss measures to be taken to resolve closed garden and other issues for the workers’ welfare.
