TT, Alipurduar, July 31: Illegal timber and furniture worth about Rs 12 lakh was seized from the house of a Trinamul panchayat member and a Shishu Shiksha Kendra near his home in a joint raid by foresters and police today.
Pasang Lama, a member of the Shishu Shiksha Kendra that is yet to open, is absconding. Police sources said Pasang, a Kalchini panchayat member, and his brother Nima had allegedly assaulted a forest range officer and a guard after they had seized a timber-laden truck and caught three persons yesterday.
Apurbo Sen, deputy field director of Buxa Tiger Reserve (west), said: "We could not arrest anybody in today's raid but we have seized a huge amount of illegal timber from the house of Pasang, the SSK close to it and few other spots. The accused are absconding. The price of the seized items will be more than Rs 12 lakh."
Forest sources said yesterday afternoon, Himangshu Debnath, the range officer of Hamiltangunj, and three other foresters were leaving Gudamdabri forest when they saw a truck loaded with timber. They tried to stop the vehicle but the driver sped away. The foresters chased the truck and stopped it at Hasimara Chowpathi. They caught the driver and two others and seized timber. When the foresters were travelling towards the range office with the trio, a car and few bikes blocked their way at Gudamdabri Chowpathi," said a source.
Pasang, Nima and few others got off the vehicles and dragged the driver of the forest truck out.
They allegedly assaulted the range officer and a forest guard. They fled with the timber-laden truck, its driver and two others. Later, foresters lodged an FIR with Kalchini police.
Today, Pasang's house near Hamiltanganj, 31km from here, was raided.
Pasang was elected as an RSP candidate. He joined Trinamul recently. Mohon Sharma, sabhadhipati of Alipurduar zilla parishad and a Trinamul leader, said: "Law will take its own course. I demand that the persons involved in smuggling be punished."
