Duars Tea Garden unrest

TT, Alipurduar, Aug. 10: The assistant manager of Dima Tea Estate in Kalchini was allegedly assaulted by a worker and few others today. Following the incident, the official declared that there would be no production at the factory till the manager took a decision.
Last night, worker Pradeep Nagesia, who was intoxicated, went to the garden factory and started shouted that each labourer should be given duty daily. When the officials protested, Nagesia dragged all 20 workers out stopping work.
Today, the management served a show-cause notice to Nagesia but he said he did not get it. Around 5.15pm, Nagesia and few others asked for assistant manager Gopal Misra.
"They started beating me up. Few union leaders rescued me and some workers chased them. I have chest pain and cannot talk properly. We will not produce tea tonight as we are waiting for the garden manager. He will take the final decision," Misra said.
Manager Sudhir Kumar Das said: "I am going to the garden from Siliguri. We have lodged an FIR."
Kalchini is 30km from here. The estate has 1,200 hands.
