Sandalwood worth Rs 3 crore seized
Pinak Priya Bhattacharya,TNN | Jul 19, 2015, JALPAIGURI: Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawans and forest department officials on Saturday raided several villages in Satali gram panchayat of Hasimara in Alipurduar and recovered a huge cache of red sandalwood.
The market price of the seized red sandalwood is estimated to be around Rs 3 crore.
A sandalwood smuggler, Tuna Tinku Narzinari, was arrested. Sleuths suspect that the sandalwood was supposed to be sent to China through Bhutan.
The sandalwood was smuggled to Hasimara from Karnataka through Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Smugglers usually take the porous India-Nepal border near Siliguri corridor to ferry sandalwood to China via Nepal.
