TT, Jalpaiguri, July 26: Two tea unions have called a 12-hour general strike tomorrow in the Dooars and Terai to protest the Duncan Goenka Group's inability to clear pending wages to garden labourers since April.
The strike has been called by the John Barla-led Progressive Tea Workers Union and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha-affiliated Darjeeling Terai Dooars Plantation Workers Union.
Barla said the Duncan group, which has several tea gardens in the region and employs around 25,000 labourers, has failed to commit during a meeting with labour minister Malay Ghatak on when it will clear the wages.
Neither K.K. Mehra, the advisor to Duncan Goenka who was present at the meeting today, nor minister Ghatak took calls from this paper.
