Storm fury in hills, plains

TT, April 5: One person died, 30 were injured and over 6,000 houses damaged when a storm struck Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts last night.
Most parts of Darjeeling town have been without power for the past 24 hours as the winds accompanied by a strong rain uprooted electricity poles and snapped power lines.
Ram Bahadur Bhujel, 27, was killed when the ceiling of his house collapsed in Kalimpong. Of the 30 inured, 15 are under treatment in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts.
Apart from the houses, schools, shops and roadside stalls have also been affected in the storm that began around 8.15pm. In most cases, the tinned roofs have been blown away. The storm has also led to disruption in power supply in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts.
Around 100 people have taken shelter at an ICDS centre in Nagrakata block of Jalpaiguri district as their huts have been razed to the ground. Officials of Malbazar subdivisional administration are working in the affected areas and distributing relief among people. The GTA formed a panel to compile a report on damages in the hills.
