CBSE approves inclusion of Rai, Gurung, Tamang and Sherpa languages in curriculum

IPR, EOI, GANGTOK, 6 Feb 2015: The Central Board of Secondary Education has finally approved the inclusion of the Rai, Gurung, Tamang and Sherpa languages in the curriculum from the 2015-16 academic session for the benefit of students in Sikkim, according to a release issued by the district information officer, state IPR department. 
The subject code for Rai is 131, for Gurung it is132, while for the Tamang and Sherpa languages they are 133 and 134, respectively. With the approval to these four languages, there are now seven local languages in the CBSE curriculum as the Bhutia, Lepcha and Limboo languages were included earlier. The press release said the decision of the CBSE has fulfilled the commitment of the state government to give students of these communities an opportunity to study in their mother tongue at higher levels. Scholars will also be able to enrich the languages by accessing better research facilities.
The state HRDD has already submitted draft text books for the four newly-approved languages to the CBSE. Further, the department has also submitted a list of qualified candidates who can teach the languages at the school level. Gradually, the four languages will find their way up to the university level, noted the IPR statement.
