Trinamul student union wins NBU poll
TT, Jan. 9: Trinamul Chhatra Parishad today won the students' union election at North Bengal University in Siliguri by bagging 51 of 87 seats.
The students' front of Trinamul is also set to grab the students' union in Malda College as only TMCP candidates filed their nominations at the college. Today was the day for submission of nominations and elections will be held on January 29. In NBU, elections were held in 13 seats at the main campus today, of which TMCP won nine seats.
"The TMCP has won the students' union election at the varsity, bagging 51 out of 87 seats on the two campuses. We will form the students' union on January 13 and candidates will be assigned posts," said Nirnay Roy, the Darjeeling district president of TMCP.
After the results, the TMCP took out a rally on the varsity campus to celebrate their victory.
The poll process at NBU began with the distribution of nomination forms on December 26. The total seats were 87 of which 79 were on the main campus and eight seats at the second campus at Jalpaiguri.
"Nominations were filed in 17 seats. Candidates have won uncontested 49 seats at the main campus and seven seats at second campus. One seat at the second campus was cancelled because there was some fault in the only nomination submitted for that seat. So elections were held in the remaining 13 seats on the main campus today," said K.K. Bagchi, the election commissioner and a faculty at NBU.
"The polling took place in a peaceful manner and no untoward incident was reported," said Manabendra Das, the assistant commissioner (west) of Siliguri metropolitan police.
In Malda, TMCP candidates submitted their nominations in all 63 seats of the students' union at Malda College today. District leaders of SFI and Chhatra Parishad have alleged that the college authorities had not informed them about dates of collection and submission of forms.
"We had no idea about the dates when nomination forms could be collected and submitted for polls. Today, after the submissions were made by TMCP candidates, we came to know about it," said Amit Jha, the Malda district SFI secretary, said.
College clash
At least 10 students were injured when supporters of TMCP and the RSS's student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad clashed on the Mainaguri College premises in Jalpaiguri on Friday while submission of nomination forms for students' union elections was going on at the college.
Both TMCP and ABVP leaders have have accused each other for the clash.
