NHPC accused of acting irresponsibly yet again

EOI, SILIGURI, 16 Jan 2015: A weekend picnic at Sevoke along the Teesta’s banks ended almost in tragedy for two female students of Salesian College, Siliguri.
Sunday's incident reportedly occurred when the NHPC suddenly released water from its Teesta-III project dam. The girls got carried away a fair distance by the river’s strong current while they were busy clicking photographs. Fortunately, some locals and picnickers came to their rescue and saved the duo. The girls are in critical condition and have been admitted at a private nursing home in Siliguri.
The hydel power company has been once again accused of releasing water without prior warning. Last year, a female student was killed near Singtam in Sikkim when the NHPC acted irresponsibly.
Recently, two bodies about to be cremated got swept away along with the funeral pyres, and a school teacher from Kurseong drowned when the NHPC released water unannounced.
