Assam carnage: Siliguri tribal org calls 12-hr bandh

SNS, Siligiri, 26 December 2014: Prior to chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit at Kumargram in Alipurduar, the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad will observe a 12-hour bandh in the Terai and the Dooars region on Saturday demanding security of Adivasi people in Assam. The ABAVP leaders today served a memorandum (though Jalpaiguri district magistrate) to the Prime Minister and others, including chief ministers of Assam and West Bengal in this refard.

The ABAVP state president Birsa Tirkey said: “Both the Central government and Assam state government should take proper steps to stop such mass killings in future.“We will observe 12-hour bandh in Adivasi dominated Terai and Dooars region in north Bengal to protest against Assam killings and will demand that government should ensure security for innocent Adivasi people.”

It may be noted that Joint Forum of majority trade unions in the Terai and the Dooars region will also join the protest.Mr Tirkey also asked the ABAVP members to look into the problem of the people who have taken refuge in north Bengal.

Mr Tirkey said: “I have come to know beside relief camps several people from Assam have taken shelter in in north Bengal. I have asked partymen to identify them and inform the administration to provide them all possible assistance.”

The ABAVP has demanded proper compensation for deceased’s family members in Assam and protection of scared people started fleeing their homes.
