Foresters rescue two rare snakes

Pinak Priya Bhattacharya,TNN | Nov 6, 2014: JALPAIGURI: Forest officials of Baikunthapur division guised as potential buyers and rescued two red sand boa snakes at Fulbari on the outskirts of Siliguri on Wednesday.

Three persons — Zaheer Khan, Abdul Gaffar and Amzad Khan — have been arrested on charges of trying to smuggle the snakes to Nepal.

The red sand boa snakes are protected under Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

On October 29, foresters had arrested four persons with two geckos, which are commonly known as takshak in local dialect. The officials got a tip-off about the snakes being smuggled to Nepal while interrogating those arrested in connection with smuggling the geckos.

The forest officials offered Rs 15 lakh to the smugglers for buying the snakes that were to be sent to Nepal. The officials also paid Rs 5,000 as an advance amount on Tuesday to allure the smugglers to come to Fulbari with the snakes.

The red sand boa snake is found in deserts of India, Pakistan and Iran. It draws smugglers as it is believed that the scales of the snake contain iridium and that its body parts are used in preparing medicine for diseases such as AIDS.

A red sand boa is sold for Rs 35 to Rs 40 lakh. These two snakes were brought from Rajasthan.
