Himalayan 100 Mile Race 2014 from Oct 18
EOI, Mirik, 16 October: Touted as one of the top five adventure sporting events in the world, the Himalaya 100 Mile Race 2014 will be held from October 18 to 22. The stage-wise race organised by the tourism department of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration will start from the picturesque hamlet of Sandakphu. The running course has been widely described as the most spectacular one in the world as runners are treated to stunning views of four of the five highest peaks in the world, namely Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu.
Five daily stages comprising 24 – 20 – 26 – 13 – 17 miles are for middle distance runners. The first phase consists of a 24-mile trail along the Sandakphu National Park from Maneybhanjang (6,600ft) to Sandakphu at 12,000 ft. The first stage covers more than 10,000 feet uphill. The second stage is a 10-mile trail to Molle that offers spectacular views of the four peaks, while the 26-mile third stage starts from Molle downhill to Rimbik (6,350 ft). The fourth stage is a 13-mile stretch and the fifth stage is a 17-mile trail along scenic rural roads.
The 100-mile course traverses through isolated jungles, pine forests, small settlements and villages and across many streams and rivers. This year’s race will be flagged off by GTA tourism department assistant director Deepak Sonar. Race director CS Panday said there are 21 male and 14 female participants from 10 countries in addition to national and local adventure racers this year.
“The race will also promote the ‘Swacha Bharat Abhiyan’ started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by giving special attention to cleanliness. It will be a great boost for tourism in the hills,” noted the director. He also said the Himalaya 100 Mile Race 2014 is the 24th edition and like always, aims to promote peace and unity.
