21 gold biscuits worth Rs1 cr seized, one arrested
EOI, Siliguri, 16 Oct2014: Twenty one gold biscuits weighing 3.5kg in total and estimated to be worth Rs1 crore were on Thursday seized from a man named Biplab Kundu of Biswas Para in South Dinajpur district. Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence arrested Kundu at the Sevoke More area of Siliguri.
DRI advocate Ratan Banik said the gold biscuits had been hidden in a bag and while one biscuit weighed 1kg, the remaining 20 were of 1 tola each (about 11gm). They had been made in Dubai and Singapore. Banik said Kundu confessed the biscuits had been smuggled in from Bangladesh. Banik suspects Kundu works for an international gold smuggling syndicate. Kundu was produced before the SJDM court in Siliguri and has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
A DRI official said gold is procured from Dubai, Singapore and Bangkok
as it is cheaper in those places compared to India. The yellow metal is then smuggled into the country through Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Acting on a tip-off on June 24 last year, the DRI seized 14.54kg of gold bars and arrested four persons from NJP who had boarded the Dibrugarh-Howrah Kamrup Express in Guwahati.
