Molest cry at JU

TT: A Jadavpur University student has complained that some students molested her last week after dragging her into a boys’ hostel on the main campus.

The student, who has lodged a police complaint, also alleged that the assaulters had snatched her cell phone. The complaint identifies one of the accused.

“She said the incident took place on Thursday while a four-day fest was on. The student alleged that the accused passed lewd remarks at her and when she protested, they dragged her into the hostel,” said an officer of Jadavpur police station.

No one has yet been arrested in connection with the complaint.

Police and university sources said a group of at least six students had spotted the second-year undergraduate student “in a compromising position with a youth” outside the boys’ hostel — adjacent to the open-air theatre on the main campus — on Thursday evening.

“The youth, not a student of the university, was dragged into the boys’ hostel and beaten up. The girl followed the boy while he was being dragged into the hostel. The mobile phones of the duo were snatched,” said an officer.

“The youth was freed after friends of the girl, whom she had managed to alert, gathered outside the hostel and started demanding that the duo be allowed to leave,” said a source. The complaint makes no mention of the youth.

Registrar Pradip Ghosh said they did not have any information about a police complaint.

Cheat cuffs

A 45-year-old man was arrested from his Ripon Street office on Tuesday for allegedly cheating six men promising them jobs in Russia.

Mohammed Imran allegedly took Rs 8.5 lakh from each and gave them fake Russian visas before he went “missing”. He had opened his office after months on Tuesday when police arrested him.
