However, when the TMC delegation along with supporters reached the municipality office, the chairman and vice chairman were not available. Following this the TMC supporters led by Hill TMC president Rajen Mukhiya and general secretary NB Khawas held a protest outside the office.
Mukhiya said the Mirik Municipality chairman and vice-chairman were fearing a backlash if the truth comes forth. “Actually, we had already announced that the party will be visiting the office today to submit the deputation due to which they have refrained from attending office,” he claimed. In the absence of the two officials the TMC delegation submitted the deputation to municipality official Subhir Ghosh.
“The fund meant for the construction of the dumping grounds is in crores, while similar amount has already been sanctioned for the provision of drinking water in Mirik. Where are these funds and why has the municipality not started the works,” asked Mukhiya. The deputation also consists of the demand for the election of Ward-2 representative of the municipality, who resigned back in 2011. Information about the preparedness of the disaster management team, rescue and relief materials in the wake of any natural disaster during the monsoon season has also been included in the deputation.
Meanwhile, Subhir Ghosh on his part urged the delegation to provide the office five days time to look into the deputation and respond to the party on each issues.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Mukhiya said the municipality has asked for five days time to respond to the deputation. “If the municipality does not respond within five days with proper explanation on the deputation, we will write to the state government and urge for intervention into the matter,” the Hill TMC president warned.
