
Sikkim to get railway connection
EOI, PIB, Gangtok, 31 Jul 2014: Sikkim is set to get connected through rail very soon following the announcement of a number of projects focusing on railway connectivity to the North East, according to the Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha.
To provide rail connectivity to capitals of Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram, Byrnihat-Shillong, Jiribam-Imphal, Dimapur-Kohima and Bhairabi-Sairang new line projects have been taken up respectively by the Indian Railways. Sivok-Rangpo new line has been taken up to connect Sikkim but the proposal to extend this line up to Gangtok has not been taken up.
Rail connectivity exists for all state capitals except, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Panaji. All the Union Territories except Andaman & Nicobar, Dadar & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and Lakshadweep are connected with rail link.
The announcement was made by the railway minister Manoj Sinha in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
