According to the police, the chief of the gang, Anand alias Darbhanaji, used to operate from Siliguri although he is a resident of Darbhanga in Bihar.
Siliguri police commissioner Jagmohanon Tuesday said Anand and his four accomplices were arrested in connection with an inter-state car theft racket. He said the gang has remained active since long in Siliguri and has received from some locals of town.
Following the arrest of the five, all residents of Bihar, the police have also identified the place and the individuals in Siliguri who helped the gang in making fake registration certificates including driving licenses.
According to Jagmohan, several others are involved in the case as has been found after interrogating the five accused. He said the modus operandi of the car thieves was to steal vehicles from various areas of Siliguri and keep them in a hideout where fake license plates bearing Nagaland registration numbers were prepared including other fake documents before they were sold.
Jahmohan said the racket was busted after a massive operation launched by the personnel of the New Jalpaiguri police outpost.
