Doctor, two others held with Arms... Eight live cartridges, ‘Ammunition-related instruments’ seized

SNS, 20 August 2014, Siliguri: Acting on a tip-off, Alipurudar police arrested three persons, including a government doctor, from the Madarihat block area and recovered ammunition and “ammunition-related instruments” from their possession, police said today.
Police raided Dr Prasenjit Roy’s house around 2 a.m. today and arrested him and two other persons.
Alipurduar superintendent of police Anoop Jaiswal said Dr Roy is a doctor of a government hospital, while the two others were identified as Ujjal Biswas and Gautam Pal, both of them residents of Assam.
Police also recovered eight rounds of cartridges and “instruments related to ammunition” from their possession, Mr Jaiswal said.
“They were produced in court today and we would interrogate them further. We appealed to the court to remand them in police custody,” he added.
“We will be able to say something on the reason behind the stockpiling of arms and ammunition and if there is any link with subversive activities only after completion of investigations,” he said.
District health authorities refused to comment on the arrest of the doctor and how he was, if at all, involved in subversive activities.
Sources said the doctor was allegedly in touch with a group of people in Assam, who were involved in arms deals since many days. District intelligence officials had been keeping an eye on him and the movement of people from Assam to and from his house. Local residents in Madarihat were taken aback and tension ran high there, including in the Madhya Rangalibazna village, where Dr Roy was posted.
Dr Roy (MBBS) was in charge of the Madhya Rangalibazna Primary Health Centre under the Madarihat BPHC. Block Medical Officer, Madarihat BPHC in Alipurduar district, Dr S Alam Mallick said: “I have information of the arrest of Dr Roy, but I do not have the details.”
