Darjeeling councillor denied bail

VIVEK CHHETRI, TT, Darjeeling, Aug. 4. The court of the chief judicial magistrate today denied bail to Zahid Khan, a Darjeeling municipal councillor of ward 18 and remanded him to 14 days judicial custody.
Khan’s arrest had yesterday triggered a poster campaign in Darjeeling, which led to the closure of most of business establishments in the town.
Pankaj Prasad, the public prosecutor today said: “ I opposed the bail on the ground that Zahid Khan is the municipal councillor and an influential leader and could tamper with the evidence. The court of the chief judicial magistrate rejected the bail plea.”
Khan, 43, will be produced in court on August 18.
He was arrested on July 31 after the wakf board filed a case with Bowbazar police in Calcutta last month. The complaint named eight former members of the Anjuman Islamia in Darjeeling, including Khan, who were accused of indulging in financial irregularities in connection with the sale of three buildings.
