Awareness seminar on consumer protection, medical negligence held

Prashant Acharya, EOI, Siliguri, 9 Aug 2014: An awareness seminar on Protection of Consumer Rights and Prevention of Medical Negligence and the role of the media was today organised in Siliguri in the presence of the medical fraternity, police administration and media personnel.
The seminar was held following the suspension of several medical officers allegedly for negligence that led to the deaths of several patients suffering from encephalitis.
The media was accused of evoking undue fear among the public by regular coverage of the problem, both in writing and through photographs. In response, Debasis Sarkar, a veteran journalist and a senior member of the Siliguri Journalists’ Club said the media are just watchdogs and never try to violate the law and intimidate the general public by “manufacturing” news stories. He added the media instead play a vital role of making people aware of the goings-on.
Siliguri police commissioner Jag Mohan was also present at the seminar.
