Assam-Nagaland Violence Kills 11 So far
Of the 11 dead, nine bodies were recovered from the disturbed Uriamghat area of Assam’s Golaghat district where violence was harsh on first day of clashes that was Tuesday. Two other bodies were found from Sukhanjan and Chainpur villages. The information came from Assam Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) AP Rout on Friday even as the curfew in the region continues. The region remains closed down from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.
Furthermore, six other bodies were also recovered from the area falling under ‘B’ Sector of the Assam-Nagaland border. Many of these bodies have been identified, however, many still remain unnamed.
The clashes began when on Tuesday during a protest-rally, an angry mob gathered in front of 155 CRPF battalion at Chetiagaon village under Uriamghat police station and began demonstrations. The mob was protesting the alleged kidnapping by miscreants from Nagaland of two boys – Ajoy Gor and Philson Kujur.
As CRPF personnel resorted to lathicharge, miscreants from across the border opened fire at the protesters. One person died on the spot and two others were injured. The attackers set ablaze around 200 houses of over 1,000 people. The violence has forced about 10,000 people to leave their homes and move out of the region. Most of these have taken shelter in 10 camps set up in the area.
This violence has affected seven villages, namely Chetiagaon, Romanbasti, Chainpur, Ratanpur, Kamphur and Sukhanjan, which fall under Sector B of the Assam-Nagaland border.
Sources say the situation is being monitored closely, as the administration has set up a central control room, comprising the CRPF, the Assam Police and the Nagaland Police.
