113 Killed, More than 21,000 Displaced in Nepal Flood, Landslide
Six more bodies from the flood-hit districts of western Nepal were recovered by rescuers today, bringing the death toll up to 113, according to an official of the Home Ministry.
More than 21,000 people have been displaced due to the flooding, while 9,612 houses have been completely damaged, and 10,165 others have been partially affected following the torrential rains that had taken place last week, which had in turn trigerred multiple landslides and floods, which have devastated whole villages in two dozen districts. In the districts of Surkhet, Bardiya, Banke, Dang and Jajarkot, which were worst affected, there has been intensified relief efforts, and kits containing clean drinking water have been provided to the distraught villagers in order to avert any possible chance of cholera outbreak.
Teams of health workers carrying medicines have been dispatched to the affected areas by the administration. So far, relief materials worth Rs.8.1 million has been distributed by the government to those affected by the disaster.
More than 4,000 security personnel have been mobilised in order to carry out rescue work. A massive landslide had earlier this month swept away an entire village located east of Kathmandu, claiming the lives of 156 people.
