Firhad Hakim, the minister in-charge of the state department of urban development, had recently announced that a few places in Bengal would be developed as smart cities. Jaigaon is 61km from here.
A smart city is one where all civic amenities are controlled by information and technology. The main aim in Jaigaon is to make it a major trade and tourism hub as it is on the India-Bhutan border.
“Today, we discussed the plan of action and have formed a committee under the leadership of Akash Magharia, the assistant superintendent of Alipurduar, who will recommend new roads to avoid congestion and a new parking zone. A number of market complexes, too, will come up in Jaigaon,” said Debasish Sen, the principal secretary of the state urban development department.
