Police Shells Tear Gas To Disperse Protesting Students in Sikkim

UNI, Gangtok | Tuesday, Jul 15 2014: Sikkim police today fired tear gas shells and lathi-charged to disperse a violent group of students who had gathered near a government college demanding roll back of college fees.
Official sources said police were forced to fire about six tear gas shells after batons failed to disperse the students. The students allegedly manhandled DC A K Arunajaya Kumar Singh who had come to negotiate with them.
The students, who blocked the National Highway 31 (A) in front of the college at Tadong, were also demanding punishment of the policemen for thrashing girl students during a demonstration on Monday.
DIG Manjit Singh Tuli said though the situation tense but was under control.
The trouble started since Monday when the students of state's only degree level college began road block of NH, which connects Sikkim with the rest of the country, protesting hike in fees. Police used batons to open the road in which many students including girls were injured.
IANS, Siliguri, July 15 : With a landslide badly disrupting traffic, National Highway 31-A connecting Gangtok with Siliguri in West Bengal and considered Sikkim’s “lifeline” will be closed for a day from Wednesday for repairs.
VOS, 15 July, Gangtok : In a squeal of fee fury, the Sikkim government college students in massive number who had been staging a protest demanding justice against the Monday lathicharge at Tadong highway was dispersed by shelling tear gas using the mobile launcher by police at around 6:45 PM.
The students who had been staging a protest near college at Tadong in heavy numbers clogged the highway from 12:30 PM demanding the resignation of Suptd Police Manoj Tiwari and other personnel involved in Monday unwarranted lathicharge.
Having persuaded by Home Secretary the matter did not resolve or students moved to clear highway, is informed. The police after repeated alerting the protesters to take back strike along highway and clearing traffic for vehicle finally doped shelling more than 8 tear gas.
