‘Mission for green, clean Sikkim’

SNS, Gangtok, 11 July 2014: With a view to expediting efforts to make Sikkim one of the greenest and cleanest states in the country, the Public Works (roads & bridges) Department (PWD) and the Rural Management & Development Department (RMDD), in association with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi, and Bitchem Asphalt Technologies Limited, launched the ‘Green Road Mission’ amid a programme here last evening.
The mission was launched by the PWD and RMDD ministers, GM Gurung and SB Subedi respectively, in the presence of secretaries, chief engineers and other engineers and dignitaries, the director of the CRRI, the principal scientist, CRRI, and senior officials of the Sikkim government.
Bitchem is a pioneer in cold mix technology for road construction and has supported various state governments in paving more than 2,500 km of rural roads in the last five years.
The Green Road Mission aims at achieving the objectives of sustainable development and harnessing the socio-economic and environmental benefits of cold mix technology for rural roads and state roads and helping the country benefit from mitigating carbon footprints.
“We hope that the collaboration will bring about a paradigm shift in the quality of roads in the state,” minister Gurung, the chief guest at the programme, said in his address.
He urged all officials and technical experts concerned to give their best to ensure optimum benefits from “this valuable addition to the state.”
Minister Subedi, in his address, welcomed the collaboration and maintained that the cold mix technology is well suited for Sikkim, considering its eco-friendly approach towards development.
He added that the technology will enable construction of all-weather roads which will be a boon for the state.
CRRI Director S Gangopadhyay told the programme that it is critical to deploy greener and faster technologies like cold mix to achieve the target of connecting the unconnected habitations.
"Development projects today must embrace measures which reduce carbon emissions and cause less harm to the environment and humans. Cold mix is an environment-friendly, pollution-free and sustainable technology recognised the world over. It is also far superior than the conventional hot mix technology which is clearly degrading our environment," he said.
