GJM, GTA MEMBERS MAY NOT ATTEND CM’S PROGRAMME IN DARJ

Amitava Banerjee, HT, Darjeeling, 17 July 2014: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha ( GJM) including its MLAs, Darjeeling Municipality chairman have not yet decided whether to attend the chief minister’s programme at the Chowrasta on Thursday. The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) meanwhile claimed that they have not received invitation letters.
When contacted Roshan Giri, executive member GTA and GJM general secretary said, “I am not aware of any invitation for the chief minister’s programme. ” Both Amar Rai, chairman, Darjeeling municipality and GJM MLA Trilok Dewan said they received invitation to the programme after 5pm on Wednesday.
“I received the invitation at around 8pm on Wednesday. As per my knowledge, the GTA members have not received invitations. We (read GJM) are yet to decided whether we will attend or not,” added Dewan. GTA chief and GJM President Bimal Gurung refused to comment.
At present, relations between the GJM and the state government has hit an all time low. However, political observers feel that the both sides could end their cold war.
Recently the GJM MLA’s had pitched in along with the other political parties to pass a motion against the Railway budget (despite the GJM being an ally of the BJP.) The GJM led GTA also gave a nod to the state’s proposal of Gautam Ghosh to be appointed as principal secretary, GTA. Earlier, the GTA had rejected Ghosh’s name. Political observers feel that these are pointers indicating that the GJM is ready for reconciliation.
The CM ‘s programme at the Darjeeling Chowrasta is slated to commence at 1pm. The CM will be announcing the formation of the Tamang development and cultural board and lay the foundation stone for a safari park which will be coming up at the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, around 11km from Siliguri. The safari park is pegged at ` 250 crores and is expected to be completed by December 2016.
The CM will also hand over keys to houses to beneficiaries belonging to the Lepcha tribe. The houses have been funded by the Mayal Lyang Lepcha Develoment Board.
Mamata Banerjee will also announce the opening of a labour directorate in North Bengal along with the commissioning of the much awaited Darjeeling water supply pumping project.
Mamata arrived at the Richmond Hill Government Guest House on the outskirts of the town, amidst torrential rain at around 7:05 pm. After landing at the Bagdogra Airport she had immediately left from Darjeeling via the Rohini route. Enroutre she had been welcomed by Trinamool Congress supporters.
