RAJESH PRADHAN, EOI, CHAMURCHI, 4 Jun 2014: Dooars-based non-governmental organisation, Dooars Jagran, today successfully rescued two girls from human traffickers. The rescued girls are from Katalabari Tea Garden in Banarhat and had reportedly gone missing from this house. After hearing the news, Dooars Jagran members filed an FIR and started the rescue mission.
Dooars Jagran secretary Victor Bose said acting on a tipoff from a source the NGO members were able to intercept the girls along with the trafficker, Lali Lohar, before they could head for Delhi. “We rescued the two girls before they could board a train to Delhi. The police have arrested the accused,” he added.
Bose further said such incident of human trafficking has seen a continuous growth in the TGs spread across the Dooars region. “This is a serious issue and the government will have to step in to control the evil practice,” he stressed. Incidentally, just a few days back a girl was abducted by traffickers from the TG and was later rescued.
“Our organisation has been continuously spreading awareness about human trafficking in the region, but that is not enough. The government should form block-level security committee and also start child development activities to spread the awareness from a young age to control the issue,” Bose suggested and pledged his organisation’s support for the initiative. He also suggested formation of panchayat level committee to keep a tab on the problem.
