Girl driven to suicide: Estranged boyfriend posted objectionable comments on FB

SNS, Kolkata, 25 June 2014: A 17-year-old girl committed suicide, hanging herself at her Behala home after her estranged boyfriend allegedly posted objectionable comments on a Facebook account that he had created in her name.
Police said the accused, Imam Khan Faizal (23), has been arrested and two of his friends have been detained.
A senior police officer said the youth, who is a resident of Upendra Bose Road at Behala, came in touch with the girl through the social networking site around two years ago and befriended her. “Later an affair grew between them. Trouble started a few months ago following an altercation and the youth refused to continue with the relationship,” the officer said.
Subsequently, the youth created a fake Facebook account of the victim and posted objectionable remarks on the site. He also provided her mobile phone number.
Those visiting the fake FB profile started contacting the girl and are said to have made indecent proposals; she was facing this problem for the past few months. “It made the girl's life miserable but for some reason she did not reveal the problem to her parents. Nor did she approach the police to get the fake FB account deactivated,” the officer said.
Unable to face the situation anymore, she committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of a room at her home when her parents were away. She was found hanging when her parents returned home.
The police have found a letter written by the victim and addressed to her sister wherein the girl revealed the entire story. Police are considering the letter a suicide note.
Police have arrested the accused from his residence and detained two of his friends who often used to visit the fake FB profile of the deceased girl and had posted some objectionable remarks.
A senior police officer advised women facing similar problems to lodge a complaint with their nearest police station or straightaway approach the Cyber Crime police station at Lalbazar. Police will help them to deactivate such fake accounts and at the same time legal action will be initiated against those who create such fake profiles on social networking sites.
