Driven away from home, rape victim seeks shelter
SNS, Siliguri, 6 June: A 16-year-old rape victim today appealed to the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in Cooch Behar, seeking permanent shelter after her father and uncle drove her out of their homes. She was forced to seek help from the DLSA after her uncle drove her out of his home yesterday, where she had taken shelter a few months ago after her father asked her to leave his house. Her mother is no more, while her elder sisters, who are married, also did not provide her shelter. The chairman of the DLSA and district judge, Rabindranath Samanta, has asked the sub-divisional officer in Cooch Behar to appoint a lawyer for her. The girl was today lodged at the Baneshwar Short Stay Home, where she will stay until she gets a permanent shelter. The DLSA took the matter seriously after examining the case.
The girl was allegedly raped when she was 15 years old. Mr Samanta said he will take initiatives to provide her justice and a permanent shelter.
