DDUDF wants Modi to walk the Gorkha talk
SNS, Siliguri, 20 June 2014: The Darjeeling Dooars United Development Foundation (DDUDF) today appealed to the Governor, the chief minister, and Members of Parliament to urgently act on the announcements made in the speech of the President of India, which was delivered in Parliament on 9 June 2014.
The DDUDF, under which Independent candidate Mahendra P Lama contested the recent Lok Sabha polls pointed out that in the President’s speech after the formation of a new central government, there was no mention of creation of smaller states in the federal structure of India and thereby no specific mention of the more than 100-year-old demand of the people of Darjeeling and Dooars for a separate state. In a press release, the DDUDF also said:“We hope that the Prime Minister and his party will bring this crucial issue to Parliament and fulfill the commitment – ‘the dream of the Gorkhas is my dream.”
Quoting the President’s speech regarding state-specific development models, the DDUDF has decided to appeal to the PM to locate some of these institutions, including the ‘conservation of Himalayan ecology’ and Central University of Himalayan Studies in the Darjeeling-Dooars region “so that the nation and people get maximum benefits out of these institutions.”
