EC: Sikkim is a small state in North Eastern region of India. It shares the border with Nepal, Chinal, Tibet and Bhutan. Sikkim is divided into four districts. The state has only one parliamentary constituency, currently held by the SDF government. The Lok Sabha (General) Election 2014 will be conducted in the state , during the fourth phase of nation wide elections. i.e. on 12th April 2014. Besides this the state will also witness Assembly (Vidhaan Sabha) elections for all 32 seats on teh same day as General Elections i.e. 12th April 2014.Parliamentary Constituencies in Sikkim.
Sikkim has one parliamentary constituency. The state has 32 state assembly constituencies out of which 2 are reserved for candidates belonging to scheduled castes and 12 are reserved for candidates belonging to scheduled tribes.
The State Assembly of Sikkim has 32 assembly constituencies, of which 2 are reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates and 12 for Scheduled Tribes. The leader of the Assembly is Pawan Kumar Chaming, who also holds the position of the Chief Minister of the state. The seat of the assembly is located in the city of Gangtok.
The first Legislative Assembly election was held in 1979, and was won by the INC. Currently, the SDF holds all the 32 seats, as per the outcome of the 2009 assembly election. It is also expected that the 2014 Assembly election will have a similar fate. Other than the national parties of the INC, the BJP and the CPI (M), the regional parties that take part in these elections except for SDF are the the Sikkim Gorkha Prajatantric Party, the Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad Party, and the Sikkim Jan Ekta Party. Ever since the SDF entered the political arena in 1994, it has dominated the state.
Sikkim, one of the smallest and the least populated states in the country, has a unicameral legislature, with only one house of the State Legislative Assembly also called the Vidhan Sabha. The State legislative Assembly has 32 directly elected members. The tenure of the Vidhan Sabha is five years unless it is dissolved. The seat of the State Legislative Assembly is at Gangtok, the capital of the state.
The north eastern Himalayan kingdom of Sikkim joined the Indian Union on April 26, 1975. The first Legislative Assembly elections were held in 1979. The Indian National Congress won the first elections. Since then, the state has held regular elections to the Vidhan Sabha. In 1984 Sikkim Sangram Parishad founded by Shri Nar Bahadur Bhandari came to power. The party remained in power for ten years till losing ground to the SDF.
The main political party in the state currently is the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) founded in 1993 by Shri Pawan Kumar Chamling , the current CM of the state . The party has consistently won the state assembly elections since 1999. It won 31 seats in 2004 and made a clean sweep in 2009, winning all 32 seats in the state assembly. It has also retained the parliamentary seat in the 2009 general elections.
The states are allocated seats in the Indian parliament on the basis of the population of the state. The ratio of the number of seats in the parliament and the population of the state is the same for all states in the country.
As Sikkim has a low population, the entire state is represented by one directly elected member in the Lok Sabha and one indirectly elected member in the Rajya Sabha in the Indian Parliament. The current Lok Sabha MP is Shri Prem Das Rai of the Sikkim Democratic Front. The Rajya Sabha MP is Shri Hishey Lachungpa. The Leader of the House in the State Assembly is Shri Pawan Kumar Chamling, who is also the Chief Minister. The Speaker of the Assembly is Shri Karma Tempo Namgyal Gyaltsen. The Deputy speaker is Shri Man Bahadur Dahal. Shri B P Singh is the Governor of the state. Some of the members of the present state assembly are Shri T T Bhutia, Shri D N Thakarpa, Shri P S Tamang, Shri N K Pradhan, Shri M B Dahal, and Shri P L Subba.
