TMC to contest from Darjeeling, irrespective of GJMM support
SNS, Kolkata, 4 March 2014: The Trinamul Congress will go ahead with its plan to field its candidate from the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency in the ensuing elections no matter whether it gets support from the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) or not.
The Trinamul Congress is banking on the development initiatives of chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the response it has got from several organisations and ethnic groups in north Bengal, said North Bengal development minister Mr Gautam Deb.
Trinamul Congress all India general secretary, Mukul Roy today held an extensive meeting with the Trinamul Congress members from the Hills, Mr Deb, district presidents of Cooch Behar, Rabindranath Ghosh, Chandan Bhowmik of Jalpaiguri and Jalpaiguri district observer Saurabh Chakroborty.
Recently, a former GNLF MLA and other councillors had joined the Trinamul Congress with the expressed desire of taking part in the development work in the hills.
Mr Deb said, at present, the Trinamul Congress has made its presence felt in four municipalities, three blocks and three sub divisions. “It has been decided that the Trinamul Congress would contest in the Hills and this time the candidate would fight in Trinamul Congress symbol.”
He, however, said that if several parties contest then it would be to the Trinamul's advantage, otherwise if a party from the plains ties up with a party in the Hills ~ referring apparently, to a BJP and GJMM possible alliance ~ then the “equation” would be different.
