Power tariffs to come down from next month
ENS, Kolkata | March 3, 2014: Power tariffs in the state will be brought down from next month, said power minister Manish Gupta Sunday. He, however, did not rule out a price hike in the future. The move comes days after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assured of a reduction in power tariff in the state.
Speaking at a national seminar on Emerging Power Scenario in India, Gupta blamed exorbitant coal price for high power price, and said despite having 80 per cent of coal mines of the country, the state purchases coal from Coal India. He also attributed non-availability of coal as major impediments in the growth of thermal power sector. “About 200 mn tonnes is imported annually. This will be prevalent for next few years and thus rise in power prices would be inevitable,” he said.
Criticising government policies, Gupta said, “We are being discriminated on every front.” He cited examples of the alleged blocking of foreign investment in power on the pretext that the state would not be able to bear such project expenses
