Mamata’s NB tour begins tomorrow...Mamata’s ‘land bank’ dream hits a hurdle
SNS, Siliguri, 23 March 2014: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to address some election meetings in north Bengal, beginning 25 March.
According to north Bengal development minister Gautam Deb, Miss Banerjee will address a party workers' meeting at four places in support of Trinamul Congress candidates contesting the Lok Sabha elections.
Sulagna sengupta, Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's dream of setting up a land bank has hit a stumbling block as three departments ~the Higher education, the Judicial and the Health department have not submitted the quantum of land available with them.
Among the three departments, the state health department possesses the maximum land area, 500 500 acres, but as the department has not maintained any record, they were unable to submit their quantum of vested land.
According to the figures collected from the state land and land reforms department, till now they have received around 1 lakh 60,000 acres vested land and around 30,000 acres of vested land from around 41 departments.
Senior officials of the land and land reforms department added that the individual departments quantum of land is to be transferred to the land and land reform department based on a four point agenda~ also the usable land available with the department, the land that is under encroachment and land under litigation.
A senior official of the land and land reform department added that they have contacted the block medical officer health (BMOH) in every district, but after enquiry, it came to the fore that they too failed to maintain land records.
For the past one year, the land and land reforms department has, in fact, issued at least 20 letters to various state departments seeking updates on the land available with them and set 31 December, 2013, as the deadline for submission.
According to an estimate by land officials, Darjeeling has the largest chunk of unutilised land which stands at 16,947.93 acres followed by Bankura. As the project hit a hurdle, the state government's decision of creating a land map based on the classification of industries has not been prepared.
According to the plan the compilation will be done by the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) once the core land bank is ready.
Mr Swapan Debnath, MOS land, said that they are trying to complete the work of the land bank as early as possible.
Soon after the Mamata Banerjee government came to power, it gave priority to preparing the land bank for setting up industries and creating infrastructure. All state government departments have been asked to trace all the land in possession and submit an account to the land department.
